FIA restructured its race control operations last year after Michael Masi was caught in controversy for incorrectly applying regulations by allowing lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen to overtake in Saudi Arabian GP 2021 .

FIA brought a series of key changes last year , yet the usage of black-and-orange flag, policing of track limits and deployment of recovery vehicles at the Japanese Grand Prix came a big talking point .

Haas Team Principal Gunther Steiner feels F1 race control needs to improve by a lot of margin after poor decisions .

Haas drivers were told to pit on three occasions in 2022 due to loose front wing end plates, despite the team feeling the car was still safe and not posing any risk.

Team Haas protested against Fernando Alonso for driving a damaged car in Austin and was not shown black-and-orange flag .They won the protest which made Alonso drop from 7th to 15th in the final classification .

Steiner in an end of season interview said ,”There is still a lot of work to be done, in my opinion .

“It’s not like everything is sorted now. I think in race control, there is a lot of margin to do better.

“We saw in the last races [of 2022] there were some decisions taken which I think need to be addressed.”

On how the black-and-orange flags affected their team, Steiner said ,” This is not how it should be. We got penalised, and then they changed the rules. Nobody else ever got penalised, and the rule was changed.

“[Protesting in Austin] was on principle: your system is flawed because the rules are not the same for everybody, and I think how it was handled from race control was not good.”
