Mercedes AMG F1 has confirmed that they will be investing in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) , in an effort to reach Net zero carbon by 2030.
The team released an official tweet , “We are proud to become the first global sports team to invest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel .SAF will become a key pillar of our sustainability strategy, helping to reduce our CO2 emissions and meet our target of becoming #NetZero by 2030.”
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is made from renewable biomass and waste resources . It has similar properties to conventional jet fuel but with a smaller carbon footprint.
SAF can reduce Green House Gas emission drastically compared to conventional jet fuel .SAF’s can improve aircraft performance as they emit lesser harmful compounds .
Though current SAF production and availability are limited , Mercedes hopes to use their powerful global platform to support the development and growth of the SAF market . With the demand for aviation fuel set to balloon in the near future , SAF can help to fulfill the demand .
Mercedes Team Principal , Toto Wolff said ,“Sustainable Aviation Fuel has the potential to transform the way we travel and the impact that we have on the environment. This is a topic that I think about a great deal personally as well as professionally .
“I fly a lot; the team flies a lot. If we must fly, then we need to find a better way to do so and SAF is the best solution available to the aviation industry right now.
“We aim to be on the cutting edge of change, using our global motorsport platform as a model for a more sustainable and diversified future.”
By switching to SAF, Mercedes will be able to achieve close to 50% reduction in their race team personnel air travel footprint .
