Singapore to share COVID data tracking info to police

Date:

Singapore has revealed that data collected for monitoring covid spread will be used by police in criminal investigations.

Earlier in March 2020 , Singapore launched The Trace Together programme ,which either uses an app or Bluetooth token to track person who you had been in contact with .

Here’s how TraceTogether Programme works .

1.The TraceTogether token is carried in a bag or pocket .

2.Bluetooth signals get exchanged with other tags or apps nearby you .

3.Interactions kept for 25 days ,then deleted .

4.If user is tested positive for Covid-19,tag must be handed over to authorities for contact tracing .

Initially to garner support ,Singapore have said that the data would be kept secured and only for contact tracing once user is tested positive for Covid-19 . But on Monday 4-1-2021,Minister of State for Home Affairs Desmond Tan told parliament on Monday that it can in fact also be used “for the purpose of criminal investigation” .

This sudden change has brought angry to the public and many have decided to disable the token .
