China and Nepal jointly announced the new height of Mount Everest as 8848.86 metres ,bringing an end to the long standing debate of the exact height of Mount Everest .
Everest is commonly known as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Mount Qomolangma in China . Mr.Xi said survey teams from both countries had spent more than a year on project and had “overcome all kinds of difficulties, solidly carried out their work, and finally reached a conclusion on the snow-covered height based on the International Height reference System ” .
The new height replaced the long associated 8848 metre- height measurement ,which was carried out by the Survey of India in 1954 .
